Previously known as Fernfell Golf Club, Cranleigh Golf & Country Club is a par-68, parkland course, which measures 5,644 yards and also boasts a newly-refurbished driving range.

A challenging, yet playable golf course, starts with a picturesque par three and features many tree-lined fairways as the round unfolds. Many of the holes require precise driving accuracy, considered strategy and shrewd course management.

The quick greens will present a stern test of putting skills while the beauty of the surrounding Surrey Hills is a constant feature of the course. With good drainage during the winter, the course remains in excellent condition all year.

The first hole is a beautiful, downhill par three over a water hazard into a well-guarded green. There are two 6ft-deep bunkers at the front of the green, which can easily pull your ball in. In the spring, Bluebells blossom on the hill behind the green, along with the white sand at the front of the green they seem to frame what is already a very pretty hole.

Top Tip: Go long or don’t be afraid to lay up. There’s not much trouble over the back of the green. But if you are not a long hitter, lay up. It’s much better to be on the green in two, rather than taking penalty drops.

The first three holes are key to getting a good score. After the first, the second hole is a dogleg par four. The fairway cambers away to the right and down to the trees. It’s not a long hole, so play your straightest club off the tee here to be in position.

The third hole is a short par four over a ravine. Play a sensible drive over the Oak tree and if you are a long hitter and you are tempted to go in the direction of green, be warned that a hazard creeps all around the sides and back of the green. Short hitters may want to lay up short of the hazard here, but remember it is all downhill so take a safe club.

The 10th is a long tree-lined par four where any shots off line end up in dense woodlands to the left or out of bounds on the right.

The 11th is a lengthy 220-yard par three from the white tees, but it’s still 170 yards from the red tees. The green has two levels and a water hazard creeps along the right edge of the putting surface. Tough hole.

The 12th is a short dogleg par four but it’s all about position here. Your drive has to be in the perfect spot or your second shot will be blocked out by trees. The green is also guarded by a small pond to the front. It’s a very attractive shot in – if you’re on the fairway!
